3 Things About the New Nissan 400z All Students in Automotive College Should Know
Nissan recently announced that they’re finally releasing an upgrade to their Z-series line of cars. The Z-series has been manufactured since 1969, when the first vehicle in the line was released in Japan as the Fairlady Z and exported as the Datsun 240Z.
The Z-series went through four other generations before the Nissan 370Z was released in 2009. The 370Z remains Nissan’s most current Z-series model, receiving slight updates periodically but not undergoing any drastic changes.
Of course, the 370Z is now 11 years old, which in car years amounts to a significant amount of time. Most rival sports cars in the same range offer better performance, newer technology, and snazzier interior styling. The 2020 370Z was noted by critics to sit at the bottom of sports car rankings and is seriously in need of a redesign. Fans have been awaiting the new generation, thought to be called the Nissan 400Z, for a long time. Here’s what you need to know.
Nissan Is Being Secretive About Its Design
Nissan is being very secretive about the design of the next Z-series vehicle. They recently released a teaser for the car, uploading a video titled Nissan Next: from A to Z, that briefly shows the new car enveloped in darkness with only its headlights and outline visible.
This video is sure to be watched breathlessly by anyone considering an auto career. The only other hints about the car have been the rumours given to media by inside sources, and the recent patent filings Nissan has made on new Z and Nissan logos. These logos sport a brand-new, retro design.

A revitalization of the Z-series might just bring Nissan out of its current financial rut. Between the arrest of previous chairman Carlos Ghosn in 2018, declining global sales, and the economic impacts of COVID-19, the company has been faring poorly. The release of this new Z-series vehicle is occurring at the same time as the cutting of costs in other lines. Hopefully, it will give Nissan the boost it so sorely needs.
Rumours Are Circulating About the 400Z
You may hear many rumours swirling around automotive college about the 400Z in the coming months. Artist renderings based on the outline seen in Nissan’s teaser video show the two-door sports car to be much sleeker than the 370Z, with rounded headlights and a more prominent grille.
It’s also alleged that the 400Z will have a twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter V6 engine, similar to that of the Infiniti Q50 Red Sport. An engine of that calibre would be likely to produce around 400 horsepower and 350 lb-ft of torque, but some have claimed it could be higher.
A Technology Update Welcomed by Students in Automotive College
When it comes to some other specs, Nissan probably won’t differ from other iterations in the line. The 400Z will likely provide rear-wheel drive and a seven-speed automatic transmission, with a six-speed manual transmission another possibility. There isn’t a serious need for upgrade in these areas, but other aspects may need reworking.
For one thing, the interior will probably get a serious makeover to replace the outdated aspects of the 370Z. The 400Z is reported to have a high-tech digital dash with new information and entertainment systems, and a cabin with a retro look to fit the retro design of the new logos. The vehicle will probably cost between CAD$50-70,000 and be released sometime in 2021.
