When Car and Driver released its picks for its coveted Editor’s Choice Award this year, there were a few great SUVs that made the cut. Great subcompact SUVs like the Mazda CX-30 and luxury subcompact SUVs like the Volvo XC40 were on the list. Also on that list was the latest version of Volkswagen’s (VW) Taos. What is it about the Taos that earned it a spot this year?

Discover What’s Under the Hood After Your Car Mechanic Training
Volkswagen decided to offer two versions of the 2022 Taos. One comes with front-wheel drive, while the other offers 4MOTION all-wheel drive. If at some point during your career you get to inspect the front-wheel drive version of the 2022 Taos, you’ll notice that it uses a torsion-beam setup. The 4MOTION all-wheel drive version, on the other hand, has a different rear suspension and uses a multilink system.
Under the hood, mechanics will be able to find a turbocharged 1.5 litre four-cylinder engine. That engine doesn’t offer the world’s most mind-blowing acceleration, but it does offer a perfectly fine 158 horsepower and 184 pound-feet of torque.
What You Can Expect from the Interior and Infotainment System
After completing your automotive training at CATI school, you may get the chance to see the Taos in action if it enters your auto shop. If that happens, there are a few different things you might notice about its interior and infotainment system once you see it up close and in-person. With the 2022 Taos, you might notice—for example—that Volkswagen decided on the safer route in terms of its interior design and materials by not deviating too far from what it’s done before. The seats feature the same familiar cloth and design. The interior looks a lot like other VW models out there.
However, there is one notable exception worth mentioning: the interior of the Taos does boast great cargo space. It offers 28 cubic feet with the back seats up, which becomes 66 cubic feet with the back seats folded. The Taos cabin can have a few extra luxuries added as well, including ambient lighting, dual-zone climate control, a panoramic sunroof, heated front seats, and a few other nice things. As for infotainment, it offers a subscription-based Wi-Fi hotspot, and a 6.5-inch touch screen that’s upgradable to an 8.0-inch version. It’s a nice setup that might not stand out too much, but that does deliver on comfort and space.

If you get the opportunity to service the 2022 Taos after your car mechanic training, you’ll be happy to know that it provides pretty good fuel efficiency numbers. In fact, that’s one aspect of this subcompact SUV that Car and Driver singled out as especially impressive.
The front-wheel drive version of Taos gets an EPA rating of 28 mpg in the city and 36 mpg on the highway. Those figures translate to about 12 litres per kilometre for city driving and 15 litres per kilometre for highway driving. The 4MOTION all-wheel drive version offers even better fuel efficiency, with an EPA rating of 25 mpg (11 litres per kilometre) within city limits and 32 mpg (13.5 litres per kilometre) on the highway.
