2020 has been quite the year, but don’t worry: Some car models are having a harder time than you might be. The list of cars getting cancelled in 2021 is lengthy, and those in the auto industry should be prepared to say goodbye to some classics. We’ll miss some of these models more than others, but what we can definitely identify are a few themes characterizing the cars which won’t make it into the new year. For one, there is a significant shift in the auto industry in favour of crossovers and away from smaller models. In 2021, we’re going to see less sedans and smaller economy cars. While some cancelled models may be replaced in the future, many of these vehicles are seeing their final days in 2020.

Discontinued can be a great option for the driver with a budget, as they can save a lot of money by purchasing a vehicle that dealerships want to get rid of. Dealerships will want to focus on selling newer models, so they’ll be wanting to get older models off of their hands. If you’re in car mechanic training, you should know that automakers typically continue to make replacement parts for discontinued vehicles long after they’re off the market, so repairing these models won’t be a problem. In fact, the owner will probably be happy that they’ve scored a deal.
2020 Ford Fusion
The Ford Fusion sedan is leaving the market, following a trend that favours crossover models. It’s still available in Europe, but will soon be disappearing from North American markets. Those who do manage to snag one before they’re gone for good will notice that it’s a good option for buyers looking for a comfortable 5-seater. Fortunately, those who can’t grab one of the last Ford Fusions can look for a replacement for their sedan hybrid needs in the Hyundai Sonata.
2020 Chevrolet Sonic
The Chevrolet Sonic is a subcompact vehicle leaving the market despite its solid set of features, including a Wifi-supporting infotainment system. Again, the discontinuation of this smaller economy vehicle highlights the shift to bigger SUV-types. The Kia Rio, one of its biggest competitors, will still continue into 2020.
2020 Alfa Romeo 4C
This model’s demise is a bit less shocking, as it only sold 71 models in 2002. The Alfa Romeo 4C is a sports car that is great for the open road, but impractical in cities and stop-and-go traffic. Why? Part of it comes down to its suspension (which is tight), the interior (which is uncomfortably compact), and the steering (which is on the clunkier side).
2020 BMW i8
This plug-in hybrid uses a 1.5 liter, three-cylinder internal combustion engine to yield 369 horsepower. It also comes equipped with a battery pack and electric motors. Featuring scissor doors sure to impress anyone with auto mechanic certification, the BMW i8 is likely to be a collector’s item in the future.
2020 Honda Fit
As this was a favourite as far as subcompact cars go, saying goodbye to the Honda Fit might be a bit harder for some auto fans. The Honda Fit will still be available in Europe, but its sales in North America were the highest in 2008, making its continuation harder to justify as customers opt for bigger crossovers. This surprisingly spacious car is definitely fun to drive, but even that couldn’t save it from getting discontinued in 2021.
2020 Chevrolet Impala
We’ll probably see another version of the Chevy Impala, whose name has been in use since 1958, in the future, but for now, it’s see you later. The 2020 Impala is a good sedan, but again, it’s being replaced in favour of SUVs.
2020 Dodge Grand Caravan
While the Dodge Grand Caravan may be the most famous of minivans, its time is coming to an end. It was innovative at the time with its ‘Stow n’ Go’ seating. Launched back in 2008, it has failed to meet emissions standards in many areas, and it will come to be replaced by the Chrysler Pacifica.
