The first model from Hyundai’s new luxury brand has arrived. The G90—which will be called the EQ900 in Korea—made its official North American debut at the 2016 Detroit Auto Show, as the first Hyundai to bear the new Genesis marque. The automaker is hoping to provide an alternative to the likes of BMW and Mercedes at the higher end of the market.
The G90 will effectively replace the Hyundai Equus, and is expected to compete with Mercedes’ E-Class, although it is closer in size to an S-Class sedan. The car is also the first to be designed by the company’s new Prestige Design Division, and is seen by Hyundai as “the first realization of the brand’s ‘Athletic Elegance’ design style.”
Can Hyundai’s latest model become a new major player in the luxury car market? Read on to find out more.
1. It Might Be The Best Hyundai Car Mechanic Training Students Have Seen Yet
The G90 boasts some of the most impressive specs Hyundai have ever delivered. It’s the first car the Korean automakers have manufactured with a twin-turbo engine and adaptive suspension, while its drivetrain options are also very impressive.
The vehicle is available in both all-wheel and rear-wheel drive, and the AWD system can adapt its power distribution between the front and rear axles. The Korean version also features Hyundai’s Smart Posture Caring system, which automatically adjusts the seat, wing mirrors and steering wheel to the optimal position for the driver.
2. Students in Car Mechanic Training May End Up Working On Various G90 Engines
Of course, it’s what’s going on under the hood that will probably most interest students in mechanic training schools, and the G90 actually offers three different engine options. The basic model uses the same 3.8L V6 offered by the Kia K900, which manages a respectable 311hp. Drivers can upgrade to 365 hp with a turbo-charged smaller 3.3L V6, or even a 5.0L V8, which provides an impressive 429hp, with an acceleration of 0-100km/h in just 5.7seconds.
3. Car Mechanic Training Students Can Expect this Car to Be ‘All But Autonomous’
Hyundai claims that the G90 is more autonomous than any car currently on the market. The vehicle features autonomous emergency braking, pedestrian detection, driver attention alert, and blind spot detection. The Korean version also includes Hyundai’s new “Highway Driving Assistance” system, which slows down or speeds up while driving in order to avoid collisions.
4. Students In Mechanic Training Schools Will Likely See More Genesis Models
Hyundai knows it still has a lot of work to do to be taken seriously in the luxury market, and students pursuing car mechanic training won’t have to wait long for the automaker’s next move. Five more Genesis cars have been promised within the next five years including the G60—which will compete with BMW’s 3 series—as well as a mid-size crossover. The impressive Vision G coupe concept, which the company showcased at Pebble Beach last August, may also become a reality.
